How Does Stress Affect Health?

Posted by Back Exerciser on February 12th, 2010

Many people are becoming aware that the state of mind we are in has a direct bearing on our overall state of health and well-being. Stress, anger, feeling abandoned or judged and other such crippling emotions can sometimes get the better of us. As a result, many unwanted responses from our bodies usually follow. Symptoms of stress show up as all kinds of aches and pains. Emotional stress manifests in corresponding stress symptoms in the body. And some of these physical challlenges can become chronic and lead to illness and even eventually, death.

It happens at times when things are coming at you thick and fast, too fast to cope or when we are faced with something we feel we can’t handle. We can feel overwhelmed by anxieties, fears and worries. This is when learning stress management techniques could be very useful. When we constantly keep thinking, fearing and worrying, what happens is that our bodies identify this state as a “threat”. It reacts to it the way it does when we are subjected to an actual physical attack. The body doesn’t realize that an imagined threat is not real. They are both the same to it. The body basically focuses on supplying the systems which are the most “vital” in time of an attack, unfortunately at the expense of other systems. For this reason, it cannot be sustained for any great length of time. This is the area where we get afflicted by stress.

How can we save our bodies from the effects of stress?

When we take too long thinking about something, our consciousness starts taking less note of the thinking process. Our bodies, on the other hand, do not. This can explain why we might occasionally feel rather irritated or suddenly very tired when nothing has apparently happened in our day to cause it.

Keep aware of what is going on in your head, without getting sucked into it.

If you find yourself undergoing a period of stress, allow yourself to acknowledge what you are going through emotionally, mentally and physically, but without going too deeply into it. When you become aware of and acknowledge unhealthy thoughts and feelings then you are empowered to do something about it.At least distract yourself if the issue is out of your control.

A further important point is to be aware of but not to give in to the typical ‘immediate gratification’ desires that arise in response to stress, the sugar fix, the caffeine hit etc. One of the consequences of being stressed is a fall in concentration levels and feeling low in energy. You could find yourself wanting to eat, drink or smoke more in resonse to the stressful events facing you. if you constantly give in to the cravings a dependency for these things might develop which will add further strain to the body.

Stress management techniques help with maintaining a sense of well being and protect your mental health too. Emotional stres that continues over long periods of time can lead to chronic depression and even the inability to cope with feelings of anger. Physically, these conditions could lead to fatal results such as heart attack, and socially they would have a dramatic effect on the people surrounded by you.

If your emotions take a hold in your mind, do not let them get to your body. Take time out to meditate, relax or be with nature.Spending time on yourself can be really beneficial, as long as it is focused on positive re-energizing and not to feed depressive tendencies. Look after yourself by gathering around you supportive and loving friends and family members. Push yourself toward any form of self expression, wind down the car windows and scream if you have to. Let the negative stress energy pass without holding onto it to relieve the stress. Then take a dep breath and relax, let a feeling of confidence, self assuredness, light heartedness and love take its place. Visualize light coursing through your body dissolving the dark feelings as it goes. Find a reason to laugh and leave stress behind.

Got Back Pain? Consider Chiropractic Spinal Manipulation

Posted by Back Exerciser on February 12th, 2010

If you are having pain in your back you might want to consider consulting a chiropractor to look into the problem further. An estimated 40 percent of patients who visit a chiropractor do so for lower back pain. Chiropractic services offer a drug free, non-surgical method for treating back pain. Add to this the fact that it is also gentle and generally very effective. The main principle that underlies the alternative therapy is that the proper motion of the spine contributes to overall health and well-being. The emphasis of the practice is spinal manipulation. In other words, adjusting the spine so it can aid in proper alignment, body balance and good posture.

Chiropractors use a variety of different approaches to treating back pain in addition to the regular spinal adjustments that they do. The approaches they use are all geared at treating a wide assortment of back conditions. Just like a physician would, the chiropractor will examine you and do a thorough assessment before he is able to diagnose the root of the problem and then take steps to remedy it. This helps him to determine what your spinal alignment is like as well as your posture. This will help him to determine if your spine is working as it should be and if it is as mobile as it should be. It also allows him a first hand look at the mechanics of how your body moves. This is not the same for every person and that is why he must observe it for himself.

Chiropractic care serves to make sure that the spine is moving as it was meant to. A lack of movement can contribute to back pain and can reach even further to cause problems with muscles, joints, ligaments and nerve endings. Lower back problems in particular can often be improved upon by seeking out chiropractic care. Chiropractors can help with back sprain injuries, facet joint sprains, sacroiliac sprains, spinal joint restriction syndromes, spinal stenosis and lumbar disc injuries (that are not serious enough to require surgery). As well, there are certain kinds of chronic back pain that respond well to chiropractic treatments.

Practitioners of spinal manipulation apply a controlled force or pressure to a spinal joint to move the joint beyond its usual range of motion. The force may be applied manually or with the use of a device. The amount of force applied depends on the type of manipulation being employed. The joint is not forced to move beyond the range of motion it is capable of anatomically. The manipulation of a joint stretches the joint capsule and causes a negative pressure. This results in the release of gas into the joint space, which causes a popping sound.

The effectiveness of spinal manipulation in relieving back pain is a controversial subject. The treatment seems to help some people with low lack pain not associated with a referred pain pattern. However, spinal manipulation does not help all individuals with back pain. Spinal manipulation is most likely to have a beneficial effect on acute and recurrent lower back pain if administered within the first 6 weeks of onset. Within this time frame, spinal manipulation appears to improve pain and increase mobility. There is no conclusive evidence showing that spinal manipulation is effective in treating chronic lower back pain. Spinal manipulation has also not been found to be effective in the treatment of nerve root conditions.

It is possible for your spine to need an adjustment without you even knowing it. Visiting a chiropractor can be a way to relieve pain and discomfort in the back because of restrictions that exist in the many joints that make up the spine.

Chiropractic spinal manipulation is a popular form of back pain management because it’s natural. Other ways to treat back pain without resorting to medication and surgery include the use of a back stretching device, which extends the spine in order to relieve compression.
