Back Pain – Some Clues To Discovering The Cause

Those that suffer from back pain should know that it is brought on for different reasons and comes in many diverse ways. Sometimes back pain is caused by a single incident, such as an injury. Sometimes it is a symptom of an illness that you have. Most of the time the back pain that you experience is the result of activities that you do every day. In fact, the way that we exercise, walk, and even sleep, can actually cause enough strain on our backs to cause everyday discomfort.
It’s interesting to note that one of the prime causes of backaches is sitting in one position for a long period of time. This goes beyond just having an uncomfortable chair, as it means sitting in any seat. If you are standing or moving around, there is a lot less pressure on your back than if you are seated. Office workers, draftsmen, and writers – who spend hours on the computer – are all vulnerable to back pain. There are now companies that produce desks that allow you to stand up if you choose, and then can be lowered so you can work sitting down. There’s also the fact that your health and well-being will be improved if you spend more time moving around and standing than if you are seated. This has been proven by research. Maybe the thought of working while standing up doesn’t appeal to you. If so, at least get up from time to time and move around a bit. Standing, stretching and taking short walks can give your back a break from sitting all day. One frequent cause of back pain is a spinal injury or fracture. Osteoporosis – a reduction of your bone mass – weakens your bones and can lead to spinal fractures. Osteoporosis can strike both men and women as they age; however, more women are susceptible to this condition than men. The decrease in the bone mass causes the bones to become thinner and more brittle. This makes it easier for the bones to become damaged. Any sudden injury, anywhere in your body, can cause a bone to collapse. This is very painful and, if your spine is involved, it can lead to deformation. Medication is often prescribed for the pain, and in some cases surgery is recommended to help hold fractured bones in place. If you do specific exercises for the torso, and switch to a healthy diet, your osteoporosis will lessen and can oftentimes be reversed. This will greatly reduce your chances of suffering a spinal fracture.
Anyone that has a lot of stress in their daily life can suffer from back pain. If you are feeling tense, your muscles will respond in a similar manner. The amount of tension that you experience each day can contribute to how tense your muscles are in your arms, legs, and, of course, your back. On the other hand, if you can discharge your stress, your body will not react in this manner. The hormone cortisol will actually be generated and released into your body causing inflammation to occur.
There are many ways to reduce stress, but the first step is recognizing it and acknowledging that it’s an issue for you. People that have injuries will often take much longer to heal if they are stressed, which is another reason why you should do everything you can to become stress free.
It’s not easy to live with chronic back pain. Even getting up in the mornings can seem like a major chore. You will more easily be able to prevent back pain from returning if you have been able to find out the root cause of your pain. If you have a disease or illness that is contributing to your back pain, you must first get it taken care of and as under control as possible. If not, simply pay attention to your overall health and fitness, your diet, and any other issues in your life that may lead to back pain.
