Could It Be TMJ? My Back Hurts

Posted by Back Exerciser on November 10th, 2010

TemporoMandibular Joint Dysfunction, often called TMJ or TMD, is known as the “great imposter” because so many symptoms that patient complain of can be related to this disorder. The list of possible TMD symptoms include back pain, dizziness, ear congestion, ear pain, eye pain, facial pain, fatigue, headaches, jaw clicking or popping, jaw locking, migraines, muscle twitching, neck pain, ringing in ears, shoulder pain, sinus congestion, and many others.

Acute trauma to the jaw joint will usually result in pain in and around the joint. Most dentists are able to treat this type of trauma with hot and cold compresses, soft diet, jaw exercises, and anti-inflammatory drugs such as ibuprofen. Patients with chronic jaw joint problems, on the other hand, rarely have pain in the joint. Instead, they tend to complain of neckaches, headaches, backaches, ear congestion or pain, and even numbness and tingling in the fingertips. This article will help explain how TMD is related to these seemingly unrelated symptoms.

Memory foam bedding materials became mainstream in the early 1990s and mattresses made from this space-age material have become the fasting growing segment in the mattress industry. Memory foam mattresses are made from high viscosity foam and do not have coils or springs. Bedding made from this material distributes the weight of body and also eases pressure points. This bedding contours to your body, giving the needed support for a restful and peaceful sleep each night.

Memory foam mattresses and toppers are frequently recommended by doctors due to their unique ability to relieve the pressure created by your weight which often leads to chronic pain, and the promotion of blood flow throughout your body will allow you to achieve a better night’s sleep. Mattresses made from this material are firm enough to keep your body supported, but soft enough to be completely comfortable.

By now you might be starting to connect the dots as to why TMD patients have so many seemingly unrelated symptoms such as headaches, neckaches, backaches, and shoulder pain. Holding the head in the forward position to protect the jaw joint requires a lot of tension in the neck and back muscles. This constant tension also compresses the nerves that pass through these muscles, so some TMD patients also suffer from shoulder pain and even numbness or tingling in the fingers. In order to maintain balance and not fall forward, the body may also compensate by rotating the hips, resulting in lower back pain, and flaring the feet out, resulting in foot pain.

Sometimes holding the head forward is not possible or is not enough to change the bite, and the joint remains painful as well. In certain cases the jaw position puts pressure on the ears, causing ear pain and even hearing loss. Sometimes the extra stress on the nervous system causes other unrelated problems to flare up, such as allergies, sinus problems, and eyelid twitching. And in many cases, the chronic pain combined with the stress can lead to depression and mood swings.

Studies have shown that sleeping with a contoured memory foam neck pillow can drastically reduce and in some cases relieve snoring altogether. Using a neck pillow made of this material can relieve the pain in your neck and head that all too often comes when you use a regular pillow. Pillows and bedding made from visco-elastic can be good for asthma patients or people who are allergic to dust mites, mildew. Memory foam bedding products are available for various prices, so be sure to comparison shop before making your purchase

Types Of Back Surgery – Back Pain

Posted by Back Exerciser on October 17th, 2010

A few months ago I was facing back surgery. Unlike most people with an aching back physical therapy and ice packs didn’t bring relief. As I considered my options I began to investigate the different types of spinal surgery. I found out that there are several different types of back operations depending on the symptoms. Below I have created a short list of the most common procedures.

Below are a list of the causes some are obvious some are not.

Smoking:  Now I’m a nonsmoker and certainly know of the risks involved in smoking. But I am not sure of the connection between smoking and a bad back.

Obesity: Makes sense – carrying around extra weight is going to put additional strain on your back.

Older Age: Okay as we age muscles get weaker and bone loses calcium. Disc in the spine lose flexibility and deteriorate.

Female Gender: Again I don’t know why unless it has something to do with pregnancy.

Another great technique to use will require the assistance of a hard surface, such as a floor. You will need to lay completely flat on your back with your legs straight on the floor. Using both of your hands you should touch your left knee and bring it as close to your chest as you can. Hold this position for 10 seconds and then slowly, with your hands lower your leg back to the original position. Alternate to the right leg and repeat this for three sets.

This next exercise is a “spin off” if you will of the above exercise. Again, you will need to find a hard flat surface for this exercise as well. Here, you will lie completely flat on your back and use your arms to bring both of your legs up as close to your chest as possible. Hold your legs in this position for up to 10 seconds and slowly relax your legs back down to the floor. You should repeat this exercise three times.

One of the top rated programs is called the Lose The Back Pain System developed by therapists and doctors of the Healthy back Institute. This program has helped thousands by strengthening muscles and eliminating muscles imbalance. As someone who has suffered with a bad back and who has endured months of physical therapy and an operation, I can tell you there are solutions for your discomfort.
